Shinyanga Region is one of Tanzania's 30 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Shinyanga. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,534,808.:page 2 For 2002-2012, the region's 2.1 percent average annual population growth rate was the twentieth highest in the country.:page 4 It was also the tenth most densely populated region with 81 people per square kilometer.:page 6 With a size of 50,781 square kilometres (19,607 sq mi), the region is slightly smaller than Costa Rica (51,100 square kilometres (19,700 sq mi)). The region is bordered to the north by the Mwanza, Mara, and Kagera Regions and to the south by the Tabora Region. Kigoma Region borders to the west, Singida Region to the southeast, and the Arusha and Manyara Regions to the east.

Williamson Diamond MinesThe Williamson Diamond Mine (also known as the Mwadui mine) is a diamond mine 23 kilometres (14 mi) northeast of Shinyanga in Tanzania; it became well known as the first significant diamond mine outside of South Africa. The mine was established in 1940 by Dr. John Williamson, a Canadian geologist, and has been continuous operation since then, making it one of the oldest continuously operating diamond mines in the world. Over its lifetime it has produced over 19 million carats (3,800 kg) of diamonds. The Williamson mine, once owned by its namesake Dr. Williamson and later nationalized by the government of Tanzania. Since February 2009 the mine is mostly owned by Petra Diamonds, with 75% ownership, the government of Tanzania owning the remaining 25%.Show on map
