The Western Area or Freetown Peninsula (formerly the Colony of Sierra Leone) is one of four principal divisions of Sierra Leone. It comprises the oldest city and national capital Freetown and its surrounding towns and countryside. It covers an area of 557 km² and has a population of 1,447,271. The Western Area is located mostly around the peninsula and is divided into two districts: the Western Area Rural and the Western Area Urban. The Western Area is the wealthiest region in Sierra Leone, having the largest economy, financial and cultural center, as well as the seat of the country's national government. Unlike the other regions in Sierra Leone, the western area is not a province. It is divided into two districts Freetown serves as the administrative headquarters of both the Western Area and the Urban District, and served as the capital of the Rural District until 2009 when it was formally moved to the city of Waterloo.

KissyKissy is a neighborhood on the eastern end of the Sierra Leonean capital of Freetown. It is also home to numerous health services, including a United Methodist Church Health and Maternity ward as well as Kissy Mental Hospital. It is also home to over 500 Liberian refugees. The Kissy Road Church of the Holy Trinity is located in Kissy Village and it should not be confused with the Church of the Holy Trinity on Kissy Road which in 1999 was completely burned down by RUF rebel forces. The village lies about ten miles east of Freetown, and is within close proximity to the neighborhood village of Jui. Kossoh town seat around a large forest reserve. The major industry in the village is farming and coal mining. Kossoh town is home to a large police academy training center of the Sierra Leone Police force. Joe TownJoe Town is a village, near Newton, in the Western Area Rural District of Sierra Leone. Joe Town is about twenty five miles outside Freetown. The main industry in Joe town is farming. The village is inhabited by several ethnic groups, and the primary language of communication in Joe Town is the Krio language. The village is home to the St. Joseph Primary School at Joe Town. Banana IslandsThe Banana Islands are a group of islands that lie off the coast of Yawri Bay, south west of the Freetown Peninsula in the Western Area of Sierra Leone. Three islands make up the Banana Islands: Dublin and Ricketts are linked by a stone causeway. The third Mes-Meheux is uninhabited. Dublin Island is known for its beaches, while Ricketts Island is best known for its forests. Banana Islands are entirely surrounded by the Freetown peninsula; and the islands are only accessible by boat, ferry and helicopter.
