Basic information about Vaisigano
Vaisigano is a political district at the western tip of Savai'i island in Samoa. The capital of the district is Asau. This area is also referred to as 'Itu Asau' (Asau district) in the Samoan language. The population of Vaisigano is 6,643 (2001 Census). Within the district is the village of Vaisala whose chief Va'ai Kolone became the Prime Minister of Samoa twice in the 1980s. Kolone also founded the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP), the dominant party in Samoan politics which is currently in power. There is a conservation area with a turtle habitat at the village of Auala and a rainforest reserve in Falealupo at the westernmost tip of the island. Vaisigano district has strong links to the Tonumaipe'a chiefly title and at a national level, the TuiA'ana.

AsauAsau is situated on the north west coast of Savai'i island in Samoa. It is the capital village of the Vaisigano political district and serves as the main business centre at the west end of the island. Asau was the centre of the timber industry in Samoa with logging of native forests. In the 1960s a new wharf was completed at Asau for the lumbering operations of an American company Potlatch Corporation. The mouth of Asau Harbour was blocked by a coral reef and both the Samoan government and consultants had difficulties in clearing away the coral. A government dredge sank while trying to remove the coral. Later, New Zealand bombs dropped on the reef did not solve the problem. Villagers claimed aitu did not want the harbour cleared. FaleālupoFalealupo is a village in Samoa situated at the west end of Savai'i island 20 miles (32 km) from the International Date Line used until December 29, 2011. The village has two main settlements, Falealupo-Uta, situated inland by the main island highway and Falealupo-Tai, situated by the sea. The road to the coastal settlement is about 9 km, most of it unsealed, from the main highway. The village is in the electoral constituency of Vaisigano East which forms part of the larger political district of Vaisigano. The village has a semi-subsistence economy and the people rely mainly on fishing, farming and remittances from family members working overseas or in Apia, the country's capital on the island of Upolu. VaisalaVaisala is a small village on the northwest coast of Savai'i island in Samoa. The village lies within the political district of Vaisigano. It is located close to the coast in the northwestern corner of the island. To the west are the neighbouring villages of Auala and Asau.
