The Upper West Region of Ghana is located in the northwestern corner of Ghana, precisely located in the Kingdom of Dagbon, and is bordered by Upper East region to the east, Northern region to the south, and Burkina Faso to the west and north. The Upper West regional capital and largest settlement is Wa. Upper West is the youngest region to have been created in Ghana by the then former Head of State, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings in 1983 under the Provisional National Defense Council. The area was carved out of the then Upper Region which is now the Upper East Region.

WaWa is a town and is the capital of Wa Municipal District and the Upper West Region of north Ghana. Wa has a 2012 settlement population of 102,446. The district was created in 2008, and was inaugurated on 29 February 2008.The District is located in the North Western corner of the Upper West Region of Ghana. It lies approximately between Latitudes 10.250 and 11.000 North and Longitudes 20.250 and 20.400 West. It is the smallest District in the Region and covers a total land area of 1,356.6 km2.
