The Southern Governorate (Arabic: المحافظة الجنوبية; transliterated: al-Muhafazah al-Janobiyah) has the largest area of the four governorates of Bahrain, and the smallest population (91,450). It includes parts of Bahrain's old municipalities - Al Mintaqah al Gharbiyah, Ar Rifa' wa al Mintaqah al Janubiyah, and Juzur Hawar (the Hawar Islands). It is the least populated of the regions on Bahrain and the least economically productive, per capita. The Governor of the Southern Governorate is Shaikh Abdullah Bin Rashid Al Khalifa, the son of The Minister of Interior Lt. Gen. Sh. Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

Ar Rifā‘Riffa (Arabic: الرفاع‎‎, Ar-Rifāʿ), formerly known in English as Ruffin, is the second largest city in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Riffa is divided into two parts: East Riffa and West Riffa. The city is mainly located in the Central Governorate, while smaller parts are in the Southern Governorate. Az ZallāqAl Zallaq (Arabic: الزلاق‎‎) is a village on the western coast of Bahrain.Al Zallaq was the home to the Al-Dawasir,AL-Zeabi and Algahtam tribe in Bahrain together with Al-Budayyi'and Juzur Hawar. AwaliAwali is a small municipality located approximately in the centre of the Kingdom of Bahrain, a small island in the Persian Gulf. Founded in the 1930s by the Bahrain Petroleum Company, it is populated mostly by workers of various nationalities from around the world whose skills were needed in the setting up and running of the refinery at Sitrah. Jabal ad DukhānThe Mountain of Smoke (Arabic: جبل الدخان‎‎, Jabal ad Dukhan) is a hill in the Southern Governorate of Bahrain. At 134 m (440 ft) above mean sea level, it is the country's highest point. The Mountain of Smoke is named as such because of the haze which often surrounds it on humid days. A number of caves of indeterminate type are in the vicinity of the mountain. Flint dating to the Stone Age have been found on and around the hill.Show on map
